Kitchen plumbing problems are the last thing you need – the kitchen is one of the busiest rooms in the house! Your kitchen’s plumbing should always operate at peak performance, running seamlessly and efficiently. Annoyingly, kitchen plumbing problems like leaks, clogged drains, and faulty kitchen taps are common issues. No homeowner wants to be stuck with costly kitchen plumbing problems, so we’ve written this quick and simple prevention guide:

Use a Drain Cover to Prevent Kitchen Plumbing Clogs

Using a drain cover in your kitchen sink prevents chunks of food from being washed down the drain, causing clogs and foul smells. Most removable drain screens are designed to fit all standard sinks. This is a cheap yet effective way to save you from the hassle of needing to hire a professional for drain unblocking.

Keep Grease Out of Your Kitchen Drains

Never pour used cooking oil down the sink, as this will solidify and clog your kitchen plumbing even before it reaches the main sewer line. Used cooking oil and greasy builds up over time and creates an expensive mess in your kitchen. Instead, put used oil into a container and throw it in the garbage.

Regular Drain Clear Out and Cleaning

Make it a habit to clear out your kitchen drain every month using a professional grade cleaner. However, make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for effectiveness. The proper use of a professional kitchen drain cleaner ensures chemicals will not damage your pipe. If you prefer to do things without chemicals, you can also use a drain snake. Vinegar and baking soda is also an effective combination for clearing minor clogs. Complete the process by washing with warm water.

Care for Your Garbage Disposal

Your kitchen garbage disposal is totally different from your actual garbage – don’t put greasy and oily food, fibrous food scraps, or hard objects in it. Clogs are often caused by disposing of “improper” food and scraps, for example:

  • eggshells
  • pineapple peel
  • potato peels
  • used coffee grounds
  • sticky and starchy food particles

Don’t attempt to fix garbage disposal issues on your own – this can be dangerous.

Use Water Softener

Water softeners work by removing hard minerals that cause build up in your pipes. The accumulation of minerals and sediments can eventually clog up the pipes leading to severe damage to plumbing, time-consuming and costly repair.
